Speidel Kellermeister - conical fermenter

Speidel seem to have done it again - not only are they responsible for creating the famed Braumeister home brew machine, but they have also created a plastic conical fermenter that will tick a lot of boxes for many home brewers, including ease-of-use, ease-of-cleaning and price. It comes in three sizes - 30 / 64 / 120 litres. We reviewed the 30 litre model:

Specs from their website are as follows:

  • The Kellermeister ist a conical tank which is ideal for unpresurized fermentation.

  • Due to its special design, the yeast collects in the cone and can be harvested and used again.

  • Fermented beer can be tapped off at the clear beer outflow and racked.

  • Its lid with dipping edge acts as a fermentation lock, a separate airlock is not necessary.

  • The Kellermeister is made of food safe polyethylene. Due to its smooth inner surface it is very easy to clean.

We found it extremely easy to use and with everything included to get up and running with the fermenter it was a joy to use. The included thermometer was accurate and both taps fitted snugly.

Yes, both taps - this comes with two. The top-most for tapping off the fermented beer, the lower tap for tapping off the trub / yeast cake for those wishing to harvest their yeast for future home brews!

The cleaning was very easy too and being made from plastic ensures that it is relatively easy to lift / maneuver.

Another interesting design feature to mention is the lid, which sits on a lipped 'dipping edge' - you can put sanitiser into this, which minimises the risk of infection. The outward pressure from the production of CO2 during the fermentation stage then gently pushes up on the lid, allowing bubbling through like a saucepan lid during boiling.

Overall, we would highly recommend that you consider adding the Speidel Kellermeister to your range of home brew equipment.
